You Can Now Press 1: ZephyPhone Supports Automated Phone Menus

ZephyPhone now has an in-call keypad. Call your bank, your airline, or any call center abroad and press digits to get through automated menus, right from your browser or the app.

The problem, in one sentence

You call your bank back home, a recorded voice says "press 1 for account services", and you have no buttons to press.

Until now, that was the one type of call ZephyPhone could not finish for you. Calls to people worked fine. Calls to machines did not. And a lot of the calls that actually matter, the ones you cannot put off, are calls to machines: banks, airlines, insurance companies, government hotlines, the mobile carrier you still have a contract with in your home country.

What changed

Every ZephyPhone call now has a keypad. Once your call connects, open it from the in-call screen and press any digit. The tones (the technical name is DTMF, but nobody outside telecom says that) are sent down the line exactly like they would be from a regular phone, so the system on the other end hears your keypress and moves you to the next menu.

That means you can:

It works on outgoing and incoming calls, in the web app and the iOS app, with no setup. If you have called anyone with ZephyPhone before, you already know how to use it.

Why this took a while

Honest answer: sending a keypress mid-call is harder over the internet than it sounds. The tone has to arrive intact and on time, or the menu on the other side ignores you and repeats itself. We tested against the phone systems people told us they struggled with most, banks especially, before turning this on for everyone.

A tip if you call service numbers often

Many hotlines let you skip menus entirely if you know the shortcuts. If you call the same bank every month, note down the sequence that gets you to a human ("1, then 4, then 0" is a common one) and you will save a few minutes each time. Your call history in ZephyPhone shows you which numbers you have called, so the number itself is always one tap away.

Try it

Open zephyphone.com or the iOS app, call any service number, and tap the keypad icon once the call connects. Rates are the same as any other call to that country, starting at $0.019/min.

If a specific hotline does not respond to your keypresses, tell us at zephyphone.com/contact and include the number you called. Those reports are how we catch the odd phone system that behaves differently.
