The apps, one by one

Google Voice

Best for: people who already have a Google Voice number. Calls to the US and Canada are free.

Watch out for: personal Google Voice accounts are tied to a US number and are only offered in the US, so most people abroad cannot sign up. We cover the options in Google Voice alternatives.

Rebtel

Best for: low pay-as-you-go rates (1¢ a minute to the US and Canada) and cheap monthly plans ($3 US, $2 Canada).

Watch out for: plans renew every 30 days, "unlimited" is limited to normal personal use, and credit expires after a year without use.

Viber Out

Best for: people who already use Viber. The Call USA plan is $1.99 a month, and pay-as-you-go to Canada is under 1¢.

Watch out for: you call from inside the Viber app, plans renew monthly, and unused credit is frozen after 6 months.

BOSS Revolution

Best for: one low plan covering both countries: US & Canada Unlimited is $2 per 30 days.

Watch out for: auto-recharge is on by default, and the service is aimed mainly at callers based in the US.

KeepCalling

Best for: pay-as-you-go at about 1¢ a minute to the US and under 1¢ to Canada.

Watch out for: the unlimited plans cost more than rivals' ($4.99 a month), and accounts go inactive after 180 days without use.

ZephyPhone

Best for: people who want low prices without a subscription. US and Canada Minute Bundles cost $0.0138 to $0.0167 a minute and never expire. Calls work in the browser or the iOS app. A bundle also covers calls on your ZephyPhone number in that country, and the in-call keypad gets you through bank and airline menus.

Watch out for: the per-minute price is higher than Rebtel's or KeepCalling's pay-as-you-go, and a heavy caller on a $2 to $5 plan will pay less. We break that down in prepaid minutes vs unlimited plans.

Yadaphone

Best for: browser-based pay-as-you-go at $0.02 a minute, with up to 20% bonus credit on bigger top-ups.

Watch out for: no minute bundles or plans, and a $5 minimum top-up. See Yadaphone vs ZephyPhone.

Talk360

Best for: people who already use it for calls to other countries.

Watch out for: at $0.05 to the US and $0.06 to Canada, it costs several times more than the others for North American calls.

How to choose

  1. Can you get Google Voice? If so, use it for US and Canada calls.
  2. Do you call for hours every month? A $2 to $5 monthly plan will cost least.
  3. Is your calling light, irregular or seasonal? Prepaid minutes that never expire avoid paying for months you don't call.
  4. Do you need a number people can call you on? Pick a service that sells US or Canadian numbers, and check whether incoming calls cost extra.
