How to Call the UAE from Abroad in 2026: Costs Compared
Dialing codes, why WhatsApp calls fail, the best time to call, and what AT&T, Vodafone, Airtel, Rebtel and ZephyPhone charge to call the UAE in 2026.
To call the UAE from abroad, dial +971 followed by the number without its leading 0, for example +971 50 123 4567 for a mobile. A normal phone call is the reliable way to reach someone in the UAE, because WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are restricted there. From the USA or UK, a pay-as-you-go service such as ZephyPhone costs $0.479 a minute to UAE mobiles, against $4.00 on AT&T Prepaid and £3 on Vodafone UK, with nothing for the person you call to install.
How to dial a UAE number
UAE numbers are written with a leading 0 inside the country. From abroad, drop the 0 and add +971:
| Type | Written in the UAE | Dial from abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile (50, 52, 54, 55, 56, 58) | 050 123 4567 | +971 50 123 4567 |
| Abu Dhabi landline | 02 123 4567 | +971 2 123 4567 |
| Dubai landline | 04 123 4567 | +971 4 123 4567 |
| Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain | 06 123 4567 | +971 6 123 4567 |
| Ras Al Khaimah | 07 123 4567 | +971 7 123 4567 |
| Fujairah | 09 123 4567 | +971 9 123 4567 |
Toll-free 800 numbers usually only work from inside the UAE; look for a +971 landline on the company's website instead. More detail is on our UAE country code page.
Why app calls to the UAE often fail
The UAE's telecom regulator, TDRA, treats internet voice calls as a telecom service that only licensed operators, or apps they approve, may provide (TDRA FAQ). Its approved list includes BOTIM, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet, but not WhatsApp or FaceTime voice calls (TDRA internet guidelines). In practice, a WhatsApp call to a friend in Dubai or Abu Dhabi often rings out or never connects.
An ordinary international call to their mobile number is not affected. That is what ZephyPhone places: you call over the internet from your side, and their phone receives a normal call from the phone network. They do not need an app or a data connection.

Who calls the UAE
About 88% of the UAE's 11.6 million people are expatriates, according to Global Media Insight estimates for 2026 (the UAE does not publish a breakdown by nationality). India's Ministry of External Affairs counts 3.57 million Indians in the UAE, and Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Egypt follow. The UAE was the world's second-largest source of remittances in 2023, at about $38.5 billion (World Bank). Behind those numbers are millions of families, friends and employers calling in every week.
Best time to call the UAE
The UAE is on UTC+4 all year, with no daylight saving. Evenings, 6pm to 9pm UAE time, are when most people are free after work:
| You are in | 6pm–9pm in the UAE is |
|---|---|
| New York | 10am–1pm (9am–12pm in US winter) |
| Los Angeles | 7am–10am (6am–9am in US winter) |
| London | 3pm–6pm (2pm–5pm in UK winter) |
| Toronto | 10am–1pm (9am–12pm in winter) |
Government offices and many companies work Monday to Friday, with a short Friday. For business calls, aim for 9am to 1pm UAE time.
Where ZephyPhone fits
ZephyPhone is built for people outside the Gulf who call the UAE now and then and do not want a monthly add-on or a phone bill surprise:
- The person you call needs nothing. It is an ordinary call to their mobile or landline, so it works even where app calls are blocked.
- Nothing to install. Call from your browser at zephyphone.com, or use the iPhone or Android app.
- Pay as you go. Top up from $5 with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. No subscription, and credit never expires as long as your account stays active.
- The price before you dial. The app shows the per-minute rate for the number you are calling. Today's rates are on the rates page.
- An in-call keypad for hotel, airline, bank and government phone menus.
Where it is not the best choice: calling apps such as Rebtel and Viber Out charge less per minute to the UAE, if the person you call can be reached that way. If you call from India, an Airtel or Vi ISD pack also costs less per minute. And if you call the UAE for hours every month on AT&T, its International Plus add-on will work out cheaper.
Frequently asked questions
How do I dial a UAE mobile number from abroad?
Dial +971, then the mobile number without its leading 0. A number written 050 123 4567 in the UAE becomes +971 50 123 4567.
Why do my WhatsApp calls to the UAE not connect?
The UAE only allows internet calling through licensed or approved services, and WhatsApp voice calls are not on the regulator's approved list. A normal phone call to their mobile number always connects.
How much does it cost to call the UAE from the USA?
AT&T Prepaid charges $4.00 a minute without an add-on. ZephyPhone charges $0.479 a minute to UAE mobiles with no subscription. Calling apps such as Rebtel are cheaper per minute if the person you call can use them.
Is it cheaper to call the UAE from India with ZephyPhone?
No. From India, an Airtel or Vi ISD pack costs less per minute to the UAE (Airtel lists ₹8.99, about $0.09). ZephyPhone is a better fit for callers in the USA, UK and Europe, where carrier rates are several dollars a minute.
Does the person in the UAE need ZephyPhone to take my call?
No. ZephyPhone calls their normal mobile or landline number, so their phone rings like any other international call. They do not need an app, an account or internet.

Yes. Sign in at zephyphone.com in Chrome, Safari, Edge or Firefox, allow the microphone, and dial the number with its country code. The iPhone and Android apps work the same way.
