Best Phone Number for Virtual Assistants in Indonesia
Indonesian VAs serve US, Australian and UK clients across three time zones. How to get a US number, call clients and compare IDD costs, with 2026 data.
The best phone setup for a virtual assistant in Indonesia is a US (or Canadian) virtual number that rings in your browser and on your phone. Clients call a number in their own country, see it when you call them, and can call you back without paying for an international call. ZephyPhone gives you that for $3.75 a month, with calls to the USA from $0.019 a minute and no contract. Telkomsel's cheapest IDD prefix is close to that per-minute price, so the reason to switch is the number, not just the rate. Here is the data.
Virtual assistant work in Indonesia: the numbers
| What | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Typical VA rates | Mostly $4–12/hr, specialists $15–25+ | Reported by Hurupay, 2026 |
| English proficiency | Rank 80 of 123 nationally; Jakarta scores "Moderate" | EF EPI 2025 |
| Median internet speed, Aug 2026 | 51 Mbps fixed, 66 Mbps mobile | Ookla Speedtest Global Index |
| Adults with a credit card | 1.6% (2021) | World Bank Findex via TheGlobalEconomy |
| People who have used GoPay | 88% | 2024 survey reported by TransFi |
| Time zones | WIB UTC+7, WITA UTC+8, WIT UTC+9, no daylight saving | timeanddate.com |
Indonesia's VA workforce is younger than the Philippines' and harder to count: there is no official figure for online freelancers. What the numbers do show is a market that pays with e-wallets more than cards, and internet that is fine for voice. A call needs well under 1 Mbps, so a 51 Mbps median fixed line is plenty; Wi-Fi stability matters more than speed.
Why Indonesian VAs need a client-facing phone number
Most VA clients are in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK. They pick up for a number in their own country, they call it back without thinking, and they save it under your name. A local mobile number with a foreign country code gets screened, costs the client an international call, and mixes client calls with your personal ones.
The usual workarounds each have a catch:
- WhatsApp or Viber calls only work if the client installs and opens the same app, and many US businesses do not use them for work.
- Your client's own phone system ties your number to one client. When the contract ends, the number goes with it.
- Google Voice is only offered to people in the US, so most VAs outside it cannot sign up. See Google Voice alternatives.
- International calls from a local SIM are expensive per minute, as the next section shows.
What calling a US client costs from Indonesia
| How you call | Listed price | ≈ US$ per minute | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Telkomsel, IDD 001 | Rp7,350/min (prepaid, incl. VAT) | ≈ $0.41 | Telkomsel |
| Telkomsel, dialling +1 directly | Rp9,009/min (excl. VAT) | ≈ $0.50 | Telkomsel |
| Telkomsel, IDD 01017 | Rp360/min (excl. VAT), 6-second billing | ≈ $0.020 | Telkomsel |
| ZephyPhone, pay as you go | $0.019/min to US mobiles and landlines | $0.019 | ZephyPhone rates |
| ZephyPhone, US Minute Bundle | Prepaid, never expires | the current bundle rate | Minute Bundles |
If you only make a few outgoing calls, Telkomsel's 01017 prefix is a fair deal, and you should use it. Dial +1 straight from your contacts, though, and the same call costs about 25 times more. Either way the client sees a +62 number, cannot call you back cheaply, and gets your personal line. A US number on ZephyPhone solves the part a prefix cannot: clients calling you. Indosat and XL do not publish a current US rate online.

Your working hours vs your clients'
Assuming your client works 9am to 5pm in their own time zone, this is when their day falls for you:
| Client in | Their 9am–5pm, your time | Hours of overlap with your 9am–5pm |
|---|---|---|
| New York (Eastern) | 8pm–4am WIB (9pm–5am in US winter) | 0 hours |
| Los Angeles (Pacific) | 11pm–7am WIB (12am–8am in US winter) | 0 hours |
| Sydney | 5am–1pm WIB (6am–2pm in Australian winter) | 4–5 hours |
| London | 3pm–11pm WIB (4pm–12am in UK winter) | 1–2 hours |
Times are for Jakarta (WIB). Add one hour in Bali, Makassar or Balikpapan (WITA) and two in Papua (WIT). US clients mean night work wherever you are; Australian clients overlap most of your morning. With a number that rings on your phone too, you do not have to sit at a laptop all night waiting for a call.

Paying without a credit card
Only a small share of Indonesians hold a credit card, and most daily payments go through GoPay, OVO or DANA. ZephyPhone is prepaid in US dollars: top up with any Visa or Mastercard debit card enabled for online international payments, or with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Many VAs keep client earnings in Payoneer or Wise and pay for work tools from there.
Do I need to register anything to use a US number in Indonesia?
Your Indonesian SIM stays registered to your NIK as normal, and the phone you use must have a registered IMEI to work on local networks. A ZephyPhone number is an overseas internet calling service: it runs over Wi-Fi or mobile data, with no extra SIM and no registration in Indonesia.
How ZephyPhone works for a virtual assistant
- A US or Canadian number for $3.75 a month or $40 a year. Give it to clients, put it in your email signature and your OnlineJobs, Upwork or LinkedIn profile.
- Calls from the browser, iPhone or Android. Nothing to install on a client's laptop or a shared computer, and the same account on your phone.
- Incoming calls ring every device you are signed in on, so a client call during a night shift reaches you whether you are at the desk or not.
- Your number as caller ID. Outgoing calls can show your ZephyPhone number, so clients recognise you.
- An in-call keypad for the "press 1" menus of banks, airlines, suppliers and support lines you call on a client's behalf.
- Prepaid Minute Bundles for the USA, Canada and Australia that never expire. Calls on your own number in that country use the same bundle.
- No contract. Top up with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay and stop whenever a contract ends.
Two honest limits. Incoming calls are not free: they are charged per minute at the rate for your number's country, shown on your Numbers page. And if you only ever call one client who already pays for your phone line, you may not need your own number at all.
Set it up in five minutes
- Create a free ZephyPhone account with your email, Google or Apple.
- Add credit with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Pick a US or Canadian number. Choose an area code in your main client's state if you can.
- Sign in on your laptop browser and on the iPhone or Android app, so calls reach you on both.
- Make a test call to a client, or to your own number from another phone, before your first shift.
Frequently asked questions
What phone number should an Indonesian virtual assistant give US clients?
A US number. Clients answer local numbers and call them back for free on their plan. A ZephyPhone US number rings in your browser and on the ZephyPhone app.
Is Telkomsel 01017 cheaper than ZephyPhone for calling the USA?
Per minute they are close: about $0.020 before VAT on 01017 versus $0.019 on ZephyPhone pay-as-you-go. The difference is that ZephyPhone gives you a US number clients can call back, and shows it as caller ID.
Can I get a US phone number in Indonesia?
Yes. ZephyPhone sells US and Canadian numbers to people outside the US, and you buy one online in a few minutes. Google Voice is only offered to people in the US.
How much does a US phone number cost for a virtual assistant in Indonesia?
A ZephyPhone US or Canadian number costs $3.75 a month or $40 a year. Calls to US numbers start at $0.019 a minute, and less with a Minute Bundle. Incoming calls on your number are charged per minute at the rate shown on your Numbers page.
Can my clients call me on the number when I am away from my laptop?
Yes. An incoming call rings every device you are signed in on: the browser, the iPhone app and the Android app. You can answer on whichever is closest.
Do I need a VPN or special equipment?
No. ZephyPhone runs in a normal browser or the mobile app over your existing internet connection. A headset with a microphone gives clients clearer audio than laptop speakers.
Will my client see my local number when I call them?
No. Calls you make from ZephyPhone can show your ZephyPhone US or Canadian number, so clients see a familiar number and can call you back on it.
