Best Phone Number for Virtual Assistants in India
Indian VAs serve the USA, UK and Australia. How to get a US number, call clients from your browser, stay within telecom rules and compare ISD costs, with data.
The best phone setup for a virtual assistant in India is a US (or Canadian) virtual number that rings in your browser and on your phone. Clients abroad call a number in their own country, see it when you call them, and reach you without an international call. ZephyPhone gives you that for $3.75 a month, with calls to the USA from $0.019 a minute and no contract. Indian ISD packs are cheap per minute, so the case for a US number is about clients reaching you, not only price. Here is the data, the rules, and how your hours line up.
Virtual assistant work in India: the numbers

| Share of tech exports to the USA / UK, FY2023 | 62% / 17% | NASSCOM Strategic Review 2023 |
| Gig and platform workers | 7.7 million in 2020–21, 23.5 million projected by 2029–30 | NITI Aayog via PIB |
| Typical VA rates | $4–7/hr admin, $7–12 executive, $8–15 specialised | Reported by GrowthHacking.in, Sep 2026 |

India is the world's largest IT and business-process outsourcing base, and the USA is by far its biggest customer. That makes US clients the default for Indian VAs too. A voice call needs well under 1 Mbps, so both broadband and 4G/5G mobile data are more than enough.
Why Indian VAs need a client-facing phone number
Most VA clients are in the USA, Canada, Australia and the UK. They pick up for a number in their own country, they call it back without thinking, and they save it under your name. A local mobile number with a foreign country code gets screened, costs the client an international call, and mixes client calls with your personal ones.
The usual workarounds each have a catch:
- WhatsApp or Viber calls only work if the client installs and opens the same app, and many US businesses do not use them for work.
- Your client's own phone system ties your number to one client. When the contract ends, the number goes with it.
- Google Voice is only offered to people in the US, so most VAs outside it cannot sign up. See Google Voice alternatives.
- International calls from a local SIM are expensive per minute, as the next section shows.
What calling a US client costs from India
| How you call | Listed price | ≈ US$ per minute | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airtel, ₹18 ISD pack (28 days) | ₹1.99/min to the USA | ≈ $0.021 | Reported by TelecomTalk, May 2026 |
| Vi, ₹18 ISD pack | ₹1.99/min to the USA | ≈ $0.021 | Reported by TelecomTalk, May 2026 |
| Jio, ₹38 ISD pack (7 days) | 30 minutes to the USA and Canada (≈ ₹1.27/min) | ≈ $0.013 | Reported by TelecomTalk, May 2026 |
| ZephyPhone, pay as you go | $0.019/min to US mobiles and landlines | $0.019 | ZephyPhone rates |
| ZephyPhone, US Minute Bundle | Prepaid, never expires | the current bundle rate | Minute Bundles |
With a recharge pack, Indian ISD calls to the USA cost about the same per minute as ZephyPhone, or less. Packs expire after 7 to 28 days, though, and every call shows the client a +91 number they cannot call back without paying for an international call. A US number fixes that.
Carrier prices were read on October 7, 2026 and converted at that day's exchange rate (open.er-api.com). Promotions change often, so check your carrier before you rely on a figure.
Your working hours vs your clients'
Assuming your client works 9am to 5pm in their own time zone, this is when their day falls for you:
| Client in | Their 9am–5pm, your time | Hours of overlap with your 9am–5pm |
|---|---|---|
| New York (Eastern) | 6:30pm–2:30am (7:30pm–3:30am in US winter) | 0 hours |
| Los Angeles (Pacific) | 9:30pm–5:30am (10:30pm–6:30am in US winter) | 0 hours |
| Sydney | 3:30am–11:30am (4:30am–12:30pm in Australian winter) | 2.5–3.5 hours |
| London | 1:30pm–9:30pm (2:30pm–10:30pm in UK winter) | 2.5–3.5 hours |
India is on UTC+5:30 all year. US East Coast clients start their day in your evening, which is easier than the full night shifts Southeast Asian VAs work. UK clients overlap with your afternoon. With a number that also rings on your phone, a client calling at 1am does not have to find you at your desk.
Telecom rules for Indian VAs
Two rules are worth knowing:
- Internet calls to numbers abroad are allowed; internet calls to Indian phone numbers are not. Under India's internet telephony rules, you may call a US, UK or Australian number over the internet from India, but internet calls may not end on Indian landlines or mobiles. Use ZephyPhone for your overseas clients, and your Indian SIM for calls inside India.
- No OSP registration for home-based work. The Department of Telecommunications' revised Other Service Provider guidelines of November 2020 removed OSP registration and allowed work-from-home and work-from-anywhere (Trilegal summary).
Paying for ZephyPhone with an Indian card
Since March 2020, new Indian debit and credit cards work only for domestic payments until you switch on online and international use in your bank app (RBI circular). Turn on international transactions first, then top up ZephyPhone with the card, Apple Pay or Google Pay. ZephyPhone top-ups are one-off payments in US dollars, so there is no e-mandate to set up.
How ZephyPhone works for a virtual assistant
- A US or Canadian number for $3.75 a month or $40 a year. Give it to clients, put it in your email signature and your OnlineJobs, Upwork or LinkedIn profile.
- Calls from the browser, iPhone or Android. Nothing to install on a client's laptop or a shared computer, and the same account on your phone.
- Incoming calls ring every device you are signed in on, so a client call during a night shift reaches you whether you are at the desk or not.
- Your number as caller ID. Outgoing calls can show your ZephyPhone number, so clients recognise you.
- An in-call keypad for the "press 1" menus of banks, airlines, suppliers and support lines you call on a client's behalf.
- Prepaid Minute Bundles for the USA, Canada and Australia that never expire. Calls on your own number in that country use the same bundle.
- No contract. Top up with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay and stop whenever a contract ends.
Two honest limits. Incoming calls are not free: they are charged per minute at the rate for your number's country, shown on your Numbers page. And if you only ever call one client who already pays for your phone line, you may not need your own number at all.
Set it up in five minutes
- Create a free ZephyPhone account with your email, Google or Apple.
- Add credit with a card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- Pick a US or Canadian number. Choose an area code in your main client's state if you can.
- Sign in on your laptop browser and on the iPhone or Android app, so calls reach you on both.
- Make a test call to a client, or to your own number from another phone, before your first shift.
Frequently asked questions
Can I legally use a US virtual number for client calls from India?
Yes, for calls to and from clients abroad. India allows internet calls to overseas numbers; it does not allow internet calls that end on Indian phone numbers, so use your Indian SIM for local calls.
Why does my Indian card fail when I top up?
Most likely international or online transactions are switched off, which is the default for new Indian cards. Turn them on in your bank app and try again.
Is an ISD pack cheaper than ZephyPhone for calling the USA?
Per minute, often yes: Airtel and Vi packs work out at about ₹1.99 (≈ $0.021) a minute. But a pack does not give clients a US number to call you on, and it expires after 7 to 28 days.
How much does a US phone number cost for a virtual assistant in India?
A ZephyPhone US or Canadian number costs $3.75 a month or $40 a year. Calls to US numbers start at $0.019 a minute, and less with a Minute Bundle. Incoming calls on your number are charged per minute at the rate shown on your Numbers page.
Can my clients call me on the number when I am away from my laptop?
Yes. An incoming call rings every device you are signed in on: the browser, the iPhone app and the Android app. You can answer on whichever is closest.
Do I need a VPN or special equipment?
No. ZephyPhone runs in a normal browser or the mobile app over your existing internet connection. A headset with a microphone gives clients clearer audio than laptop speakers.
Will my client see my local number when I call them?
No. Calls you make from ZephyPhone can show your ZephyPhone US or Canadian number, so clients see a familiar number and can call you back on it.
